What causes in growing toenails?
In growing toenails are often joked about, but they are extremely painful and can potentially lead to serious infection and sepsis. People try to manage the problem themselves but usually make the toe worse, and then it takes longer for us to sort it out. We suggest soaking it in salt water and calling us asap!
There are several causes, and sometimes it’s a combination of factors. If the causes aren’t identified and dealt with, it can return. Also, antibiotics only reduce inflammation for a while and are not a cure. You still need to see a podiatrist.
Poor nail cutting features highly as a contributing factor, along with ill fitting footwear, poor foot hygiene and trauma. However, some people are just unfortunate with the nail shape they have inherited and the way pressures are being applied to the foot (their biomechanics).
It’s a condition that can occur in young children through to the elderly, and can be quite distressing. Although it is a very painful condition, it doesn’t have to be painful to sort it out. We are skilled in removing nail spikes and can put a local anaesthetic into the toe if required.
Children and young adults may have nail surgery to ‘cure’ the condition. This is a simple procedure done with a local anaesthetic and is highly effective.
